Special Education Program

 
Beenleigh State High School is an inclusive school in the Beenleigh area. The Special Education Program which caters for all impairments, encourages all students to access the curriculum and social skills needed for them to become active citizens.
The SEP subscribes to and implements both fully inclusive and partially inclusive programs. Some students spend time learning in the SEP in small class settings in order to cater for the varying degrees of the disabilities and personal issues.
 
We cater for students with: 
·        Intellectual Disability
·        Autism Spectrum Disorder
·        Speech Language Impairment 
 
We cater for the needs of students who also have: 
·        Physical Impairment
·        Hearing Impairment
·        Visual Impairment

Course
Outline
PLD
Personal Learning Dimensions –
·     Students learn about their own physical development, building and maintain healthy relationships with friends and partners, Self-care, basic life skills incl. shopping, cooking, cleaning and washing, whilst building communication skills.
 
·     Senior students are participating in a Barista course, student sell these goods to teachers to raise funds for later projects. This is part of the enterprise program.
 
·     Aromatherapy and skin care range, is part of an enterprise program. Students learn about care of their skin, properties of the essential oils. Students then create products, develop branding and marketing outlines.
 
·     Assessment support for furnishings.
EAB
Employment and Beyond –
·     This is an employment readiness program. Students, learn about different workforce options, engage in work experience, prepare a resume and interview clothing and conduct mock phone and face to face interviews. This subject works in close correlation with PLD and ASDAN.
Rock and Water
A program aimed at establishing confidence, self-awareness and self-esteem.
ASDAN - SEP
·     Students run a garden, and bee keeping program with produce to be sold at school and used for a cooking program. This horticulture program is part of the enterprise program.
 
·     Farm to table: Budgeting, meal preparation,   function planning and cooking with grown ingredients.
Short Course Numeracy
This course is designed to build on the previously scaffolded skills in 7-10 Numeracy. This course can earn students 1 Numeracy point towards their QCE.
Short Course Literacy
This course is designed to build on the previously scaffolded skills in 7-10 Literacy. This course can earn students 1 Literacy point towards their QCE.
Junior Computing
Specifically designed computer program developed to support student’s skill development for the Microsoft suite. Students learn to store, access, edit and publish work.
Furnishings
Small group work with additional scaffolding and adjusted materials students make furnishing projects.
EEP
Educational Enterprise Programs-
·     Students source materials, and construct resources for cross curricula programming.
PCYC
Students engage in team building activities building on social and communication skills.

Building awareness of physical fitness through goal setting. Students can engage in short and long term goals i.e. Kokoda Challenge.
