Strawberry Jam for Sale

Beenleigh SHS Strawberry Jam For Sale!

The two year 11 Kitchen Operations learnt the production process of making jam, from selecting and picking the fruit, to sealing the jars and labelling. Beenleigh SHS has a strong community relationship with the Hammel Family strawberry farm and were lucky enough to be donated 50 kg of fresh strawberries. We were also donated two sacks of unprocessed sugar from Bill Heck. Students went to the farm to pick the strawberries from the plants and on return individually cooked a batch of jam each.
A total of 150 jars of jam were prepared, with home-made personal labelling. These are available to purchase from the front office for $5. The P & C president Greg Hammel was delivered several jars and a taste test was held to critique the quality including colour, taste and consistency. Each student that was involved in the process also took home a jar to share with their families. This event is an annual tradition with the date for picking already locked in the calendar ready to teach another year of students to the tradition of jam making!
